Confirmed Acts for Ottawa Bluesfest

As you probably already know, the list of confirmed acts (to date) for the 2010 Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest festival went up yesterday. There are some pretty good bands on the list, but personally I am most excited to see: Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, Metric, Passion Pit, Great Lake Swimmers, The Rural Alberta Advantage, and a band that I know personally from high school, The Love Machine.

I bought the full festival pass last year thinking that I would save some money but I actually ended up losing money in the end. I went and saw all of the bands I wanted to see (honourable mentions to Okkervil River and GirlTalk) but I ended up being too busy to see the other bands that I “sort of” wanted to see.

Since I might be moved out downtown by then it might be worth getting a full pass, in which case I would most likely go see Joan Jett, Matthew Good, Moneen, and maybe Drake (only because he was in Degrassi).

I’m sure there are plenty of other amazing bands playing that I haven’t mentioned, but it’s only because I haven’t heard them yet. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Justin Vernon covers a Tom Petty song

At the 2010 MusicNOW festival in Cincinnati, Justin Vernon performed a cover of Tom Petty’s “Crawling Back to You”. Tom Petty’s is a classic, but I think I like this version better than the original. Then again, I don’t think anything that comes out of Justin Vernon’s mouth could sound even remotely bad. Here it is:

Girl Talk Concert

Good Morning!

Last night was the Girl Talk concert so I’m a little tired today. We drove down with six people in my Honda Accord and we got pumped for the concert by listending to Girl Talk in the car. We arrived at the Civic Centre around 6:30 and there was a huge line. Too bad we missed the memo on Facebook that the doors opened at 7pm, and not 6pm like it said on the tickets. I don’t know what it is about waiting but it just sucks the excitement out of everything. First we waited in line, then we had to wait through a local talent performance, but worst of all was the lackluster performance put on by The Arkells which was disappointing.

However, when Gregg Gillis was on the stage everything changed. The crowd came alive and the finally everyone got what they had come for. It’s amazing how one person can control a huge room of people like that, he just has this presence on stage that no one can compete with. He used a lot of new music last night but still stayed true to originals like “Play Your Part” and his mashup of  Notorious B.I.G’s “Juicy” and Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer”. All in all, the show was great thanks to Gillis’s contagious energy and I can’t wait until I can see Girl Talk perform again.

(This is not a picture from last night, but it may as well be. Same scene, just different people.)

Collection of Ingenious lyrics from Girl Talk compilations

Here is a taste of some the best/most outrageous lyrics from the various artists which make up the Girl Talk compilations. I listened to the Girl Talk albums all summer long, literally just played the albums over and over, so I know all the words to these songs… however,  that doesn’t make it any less surprising when I hear them coming out of my own mouth.

These are all from the album Feed The Animals.

From “Play Your Part (Pt. 1)”:

Sweet Jones
By bitch a choosey lover, never fuck without a rubber
Never in the sheets, like it on top of the cover
Money on the dresser, drive a compressor
Top notch hoes get the most, not the lesser
trash like the fuck for 40 dollars in the club
fucking up the game, bitch you gets no love
She be cross country givin all that she got
A thousand a pop, Im pullin Bentleys off the lot
I smashed up the grey one, bought me a red
Every time we hit the parking lot we turn heads
Some hoes wanna choose but them bitches too scary
Your bitch chose me, you aint a pimp you a fairy

From “Play Your Part (Pt. 2)”:

Toot that thang up mami make it roll
Once you pop, pop lock drop it for me girl get low
If your mama gave it to you baby girl let it show
Once you pop lock drop it for me maybe we can roll (oh)

From “What It’s All About”:

I grew up on the crime side, the New York Times side
Stayin’ alive was no jive on second hands
Moms bounced on old men
So then we moved to Shaolin land
A young youth, yo rockin the gold tooth, ‘Lo goose
Only way, I begin to gee off was drug loot
And let’s start it like this son, rollin wit this one
And that one, pullin out gats for fun
But it was just a dream for the teen who was a fiend
Started smokin woolies at 16
And running up and gates, and doing hits for high stakes
Makin’ my way on fire escapes
No question I would speed, for cracks and weed
The combination made my eyes bleed
No question I would flow off and try to get the dough all
Stickin’ up white boys on ball courts

From “Give Me A Beat”:

If you got the fattest ass on the block now drop
Let a nigga see the coochie pop now drop
Do the snake do the freak do the pop now drop
Yo dont stop dont stop
Real eyes down south thighs now drop
Waist line five six seven now drop
One time all in together now drop
Yo dont stop dont stop

…Back in the day I dip my shirt in dirt
Sometimes I got away clean, sometimes people got hurt
But if you know me, you know that I’m liable
to bust a cap cos it’s all about survival of the fittest
I’m a menace crook
I did so much dirt I need to be in the Guinness Book
From the shit I took from people
I reap all your fat shit, jack
Back to the criminals sect
I leave crew after crew but they can’t catch me yet
Cos I’m slick as slippery
They can’t get wit me, cops ain’t shit to me
I can’t dig a pig so I drop the dogs
and sweat em like sweathogs
and get mad, mad cos I’m the nigga that flaunt it
AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted

From “No Pause”:

Jiggle it, jiggle it
Put, put that pussy on me
Jiggle it, jiggle it
Yea, yea, put that pussy on me
Jiggle it, jiggle it
Put-put-put-put that pussy on me
Jiggle it, jiggle it
Yea, yea put that pussy on me

I want you to want me
Put-put-put-put that pussy on me
I want you to want me
Yea, yea put that pussy on me
I want you to want me
Put-put-put-put that pussy on me
I want you to want me
Yea, yea put that pussy on me

Jig it and jiggle it
Jig it and jiggle it
Jig it and jiggle it
Jig it and jiggle it

Excuse me while I kiss the sky!
Jiggle it

Get buzzed, get drunk, get crunked, get fuucked up
Hit the strip club don’t forget ones get your dick rubbed
Get fucked, get sucked, get wasted, shit faceted
Pasted, blasted, puke drink up, get a new drink
Hit the bathroom sink, throw up
Wipe your shoe clean, got a routine
Knowin still got a few chunks on your shoestring
Showin I was dehydrated till the beat vibrated
I was revibed as soon as this Bitch gyrated
And hips and licked them lips and that was it
I had to get Nate Dogg here to sing some shit

La la la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la la

I’m on the Pursuit of Happiness

I don’t normally listen to much rap or anything, but this is a sick song. It’s called “Pursuit of Happiness” and it is by Kid Cudi, ft. MGMT and Ratatat. Ratatat… who is that? Dammit I kind of like the song Day’n Nite too…

Corey and I watched the music video for “Pursuit of Happiness” last night, and here it is:

Speaking of MGMT, we also watched the video for their single “Flash Delirium” which is from the album Congratulations, to be released April 13th. The video was really strange and after listening to the song all the way through I was left with mixed emotions. The song doesn’t really have any flow to it and it definitely didn’t make me what to dance like the songs from their first album Oracular Spectacular did. Decide for yourself, here’s the video:

The National – New Album

Good Morning!

The first song I heard  by The National was  “So Far Around The Bend” on an album called Dark Was The Night. There are two of these albums, one is called “This Disc”, and other “That Disc”, and both are definitely worth checking out because they include so many amazing artists such as Feist, Bon Iver, Dirty Projectors, Arcade Fire and Beirut… just to name a few. I think I know every word to the first 5 songs because that’s all I can get through on my way to and from work. This song by The National is really catchy and Matt Beringer, by whom the song is written and sung, has a very distinctive and deep voice.

That being said, The National are scheduled to release a new album on May 11th called High Violet. They have been performing in small venues to promote the album, and appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon earlier this month. I found one of the songs,  “Bloodbuzz Ohio”, from the new album on youtube, so here it is:
